It was a typical Saturday morning; up before dawn and in the car with Harper on the way to the Dog Park. Autumn has arrived in Harper’s Valley and the temperatures are very pleasant at that time of day. We’re still a couple of months away from long pants or sweatshirts but it is nice to drive through the brightening morning with the car windows open and the air conditioning off. Actually an open window is somewhat obligatory with Harper in the car but having it replace the A/C rather than frustrate it was a nice change.
There was a good mix at the Dog Park; a few 6:00 AM regulars and some new faces to see (for me) and new butts to sniff (for Harper). There was a weird vibe in the air though. A Facebook friend suggested the full moon as a possible cause. There were several ‘near fights’; not serious enough that any of the dogs was actually doing damage to their fellows but enough that the ‘parents’ were having to intervene to break things up. There were no particular troublemakers; just a strangeness that contributed to a general increase in the tension level.
We decided to cut our visit shorter than usual and head home. I stopped briefly; very briefly as it turned out; to chat with ‘Reggie’s mom’. Humans at the Dog Park don’t have names – only associations to their dogs; LeRoy’s mom. Harper’s dad, etc. As I stood there a familiar greyhound wandered over, I thought for a bit of a scratch. I was wrong. Said greyhound promptly lifted its leg and proceeded to pee on my leg.
….. and it wasn’t even 7:15 AM yet. The day can only improve.
