One of my favorite blogs is Post Apocalyptic Bohemian. Stephen marks the birthdays of some of the people who have influenced the popular culture and our collective consciousness with brief and wonderfully written biographical sketches. On Thursday he wrote about Leslie Gore.
I’ve always liked Ms. Gore. Her Greatest Hits are frequently featured on my iPod. Whenever her name is mentioned there is one image that comes instantly to mind. Batman, 1967, Leslie Gore as “Pussycat”; one of the minions of Cat Woman; played, at that time, by the statuesque Julie Newmar. Leslie sings “California Nights” while wistfully thinking about her unrequited love for Robin; The Boy Wonder.
I was 11 years old. Even then it was not my favorite LG song. Neither is she a particularly good actress. And yet it is a vivid childhood memory. I’m not sure if I wanted to be Robin or I just wanted Robin. Hindsight being 20/20, I think Pussycat and I may have had something in common. I mean something more than the desire to lie around the hide-out wearing pink ears.
In the episode, Cat Woman gives Pussycat some sound career advice. “Either you’re gonna be a singer or an arch-criminal. You can’t be both.” Leslie made the right choice.
