Jerstad-Agerholm Junior High School
8th Grade – 1970
In Racine Public Schools in those days, maybe still, the junior high schools included grades 7, 8, & 9. Baby-boom demographics being what they were, the public schools were bursting at the seams. Our School Board experimented with alternative schedules to squeeze the maximum capacity from the facilities. There was a different scheduling plan every year. For 1969-1970 they tried staggered shifts. As an 8th grader, I started school about 9:30 AM and finished after 5:00 PM. I hated that schedule.
The haircut is by Tupperware. White was probably not the best choice for ‘picture day’ but I loved that sweater.
There’s an oddness about this photo. The smile is only in my mouth and not in my eyes. When I look at the smile the word that comes to mind is “smarmy”. I wonder what that was about. Maybe it was just adolescence. My grandmother would say I look like I was: “getting too big for my britches”. An odd expression for an odd expression.
